McBain, D. Louise (Bischoff)

D. Louise McBain
July 22, 1920-June 21, 2003

D. Louise McBain, 82, formerly of South Seventh Street, Niles, Mich., died at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2003, in her daughter's home at 307 Whitman Court, Buchanan, Mich., where she resided since 1997, following an extended illness.

She was born July 22, 1920, in Niles to Charles and Bertha (Smith) Bischoff.

Louise was the former director of nursing for the River Park Nursing Home in South Bend. She also was a nurse at Berrien General Hospital in Berrien Center, Mich., and at Silverbrook Manor in Niles. She also practiced nursing in private homes in the community.

Louise enjoyed reading books at the Niles Community Library and taking care of her grandchildren even in her illness.

On Dec. 24, 1938, in Niles she married Joe K. McBain who died Feb. 4, 1974. Her son, Dale L. McBain; and granddaughter, Kelly L. McBain also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter, RaeAnn McBain (Larry) Clark of Buchanan; grandchildren, David J. (Mary) Clark of Buchanan, Christopher L. Clark of Niles, Cory Dale (Cherri) McBain of Buchanan, Kim (Todd) McNeely of Buchanan, Vicky (Bob) Ruth of Buchanan, Valerie Klodzinski of Mishawaka, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Brittany McBain, Shelby Clark, and Robert Ruth; step-grandchildren, Marcus Russell, Alex and Austin McNeely, Robin, Rachel and Robbie Bahr; and a daughter-in-law, Tish McBain of Buchanan.

Graveside funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles with the Reverend Charles Stanley of Life Action Ministries officiating. Interment will follow. There will be no public visitation.

Arrangements were made by the Halbritter Funeral Home.

Contributions in memory of D. Louise McBain may be made to the Niles Community Library.

McAllister, Bobbie E.

Bobbie E. McAllister
March 2, 1943-April 15, 2007

Bobbie E. McAllister, 64, of Teeside Drive, Snellville, GA, formerly of Niles and Cassopolis, died unexpectedly but of natural causes in her home, April 15, 2007.  She was born March 2, 1943. Survivors include her children, James McAllister Jr. of Suwanee, GA, Felicia McAllister of Snellville and William McAllister of Niles; six grandchildren; and brothers, Jim O. Easterwood of Sarasota, FL, Gil Easterwood of Dacula, GA, and Dairold Easterwood of Fairfax, VA. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles. Friends may call one hour prior to the services in Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles.

Mayhew, Marjorie L. (Patton)

Marjorie L. Mayhew
June 24, 1917-Jan. 25, 1999

Marjorie L. Mayhew, 81, formerly of the 68000 block of Lake Street, Edwardsburg, Mich., now a resident of 75 Academy Dr., Candler, N.C., died Monday morning at 6 a.m., Jan. 25, 1999, in Mission Hospital of Asheville, where she was a patient for 5 days.

Mrs. Mayhew was born on June 24, 1917, in Erie, Pa., the daughter of Dr. Roy Edwin Patton and Jessie A. Patton. She had lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, Washington, D.C., California and Florida before coming to Edwardsburg in 1983. She moved to Candler in 1988.

As Marjorie L. Patton, she was married on Dec. 17, 1939 in Cincinnati to James M. Mayhew, who died on April 2, 1988 in Edwardsburg.

Surviving are three daughters, Judith Ann Briley of Atascadero, Calif., Janice Lucille Sewell of Evansville, Ind., and Sandra Lynn Wright of Candler, N.C. There are seven grandchildren, who are: James and Byron Briley, Dr. Geoffrey Sewell and Gregory and Gary Sewell, Aimee Patterson and Stacee Wright. There are three great-grandchildren, who are Hunter, Zachery and Mason Sewell. There are two brothers-in-law, Paul Mayhew of Edwardsburg and S. David Mayhew of Scottsville,Ky.

One brother, Dr. Lee Emerson Patton and two sisters, Anna Mae Rice and Dorothy Carr are all deceased.

Mrs. Mayhew was a member of the Pisgah Academy, Candler, N.C., and Seventh Day Adventist Church. She worked as an office secretary in Lancaster, Calif., for her brother, Dr. Patton's Medical Office for many years.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29, in Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles, Mich.

Friends are being received at the funeral home from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday and one hour before services on Friday.

Mayer, Dorothy F.

Dorothy F. Mayer
July 10, 1911-July 3, 1994

Dorothy F. Mayer, 82, of 1440 S. 13th St.,  Niles, died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday July 3. 1994, in Pawating Hospital, after an illness. Mrs. Mayer was a former employee of Bendix/AlliedSignal and had been an elementary school teacher for 11 years in the Galien School system in the 1930s. She was born on July 10, 1911, in Galien. On Oct. 21, 1967, in Niles, she married Reuben Walter Mayer. He survives, with a daughter, Madelyn Y. Pease of Baldwin, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma Zebell of Baldwin. Mrs. Mayer was a member of Fulkerson Park Baptist Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Halbritter Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Maxwell, Herbert E. Jr.

Herbert E. Maxwell Jr.
June 19, 1938-April 17, 1997

Herbert E. Maxwell Jr., 58, of Country Club Drive, Niles, died Thursday April 17, 1997,  in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She was born June 19, 1938.  Survivors include his wife, Mary L. (Weimer); and a sister, Karen Oghalai of Stoughton, Wis. Graveside services were held in Silverbrook Cemetery. Halbritter Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Mattiford, Walter

Walter Roy Mattiford, 62, of 1887 Baldwin Drive, , Niles, died at 7:28 p.m. Friday July 2, 1932, in Pawating Hospital after an illness. Mr. Mattiford retired from Bender & Louden after six years and was employed by Tucker Freight for 25 years. He was born July 2, 1932, in Niles and was a lifetime area resident. On May 12, 1962, in Niles, he married Beverly A. Franzen. She survives with two sons, Jeffrey and David, both of Niles; three grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Nave of Niles; and a brother, Frank of Niles. He was a member of Niles Eagles Lodge, Teamster's Local 364, South Bend; Teamster's Local 7, Kalamazoo; and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Halbritter Funeral Home. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Michigan Heart Association or the church.

 

Matthews, Jennifer Lynn

Jennifer Lynn Matthews
March 26, 1976-August 20, 1999


Funeral services for  Jennifer "Jenny" Lynn  Matthews will be Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Pifer-SMITH Funeral Home, Niles, at 11 a.m.

Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Matthews died Friday, Aug. 20 at St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend, Ind. following an automobile accident.

She was born March 26, 1976 in Niles, Michigan. She was a student at IUSB where she was majoring in photography.  Matthews was a 1998 graduate of Southwestern Michigan College with a degree in graphic design.

She worked as a bank teller at Bank One, South Bend.

Surviving are parents Daryl A. "Butch" and Susan M. (Gromski) Matthew of Edwardsburg, and maternal grandparents Walter and Mildred Gromski  of South Bend.

Visitation is this evening from 5-8 at Pifer-SMITH Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the family for the establishment of a scholarship fund in her memory.

Jennifer Lynn ''Jenny'' Matthews, 23, of 27824 Pine Lake St., Edwardsburg, Mich., died on Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind., of injuries from a car accident. She was born March 26, 1976.

She was a student at Indiana University at South Bend, majoring in Photography. She graduated in 1998 from Southwestern Michigan College with an Associates Degree in Graphic Design, and worked as a bank teller at Bank One in South Bend.

She is survived by her parents, Susan M. (Gromski) and Daryl A. ''Butch'' Matthews of Edwardsburg; and by her maternal grandparents, Mildred and Walter Gromski of South Bend.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in Pifer-Smith Funeral Home, 521 E. Main St., Niles, Mich., where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Memorial contributions may be given to the family for the establishment of a scholarship fund in Jennifer's memory.
