Obituary of Mrs. Myrtle E. Canfield
     Mrs. Myrtle E. Canfield, 84, of 1104 Oak St., died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Quick's Convalescent Home after an illness of two months.
     She was born July 30, 1875, in Buchanan and moved here from Buchanan 47 years ago.  Her husband, George, died in 1932.  She was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
     Mrs. Canfield is survived by a son, Ray Canfield, Niles; two daughters, Mrs. Byford Jones, Niles, and Mrs. Lewis Webber, Honor, Mich.; 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
     Friends may call at the Kiger-Halbritter Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. John P. MacLachlan, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery

George Harvey Canfield
Died April 5, 1935

    George Canfield, 52[sic], a native of Vermont, died at the county infirmary this morning.  Before his illness, he was employed in Niles as a laborer.  Survivors are his widow, Myrtle, one son, Raymond Canfield, and two daughters: Mrs. Byford Jones and Mrs. Dennis[sic] Webber.  Funeral services will be held in the Rutherford funeral home Monday, but the hour has not been decided.

Amanda Webber
Died September 25, 1938

MRS. A. WEBBER, AGED RESIDENT OF CASS CO., DEAD

            Mrs. Amanda Webber, one of Cass county’s oldest residents, died at 7:50 o’clock Sunday night in the home of her son William, three miles northeast of Pokagon.  She was 90 year[sic] old.

            Mrs. Webber had made her home with her son since the death of her husband, Jacob, who died in 1924.

            She was born in Huron county, Ohio, and moved to South Bend with her parents when a small child.

            Besides her son at whose home she died, Mrs. Webber leaves four other sons, Joseph and Guy, Niles, and Clarence and Harry, Kalamazoo; one brother, Manuel Rupley, California; also 16 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

    Mrs. Henry Webber, a pioneer resident of Niles, passed away Tuesday night at her home 1202 Sycamore street after an illness, covering a period of 14 weeks from anemia.  Mrs. Webber was born in Ohio, Sept. 27, 1850.  She was united in marriage to Henry Webber, 43 years ago, and has since resided continuously at the home, where her death occurred.
    Mr. and Mrs. Webber were the parents of 12 children, 7 of whom survive their mother.  They are Emory and Judson Webber, Mrs. Carl Reum, Mrs. Arthur Laufbol and Mrs. Henry Williams all of this city; Mrs. Andy Dark of South Bend, Mrs. Herbert Willif[sic] of St. Joseph, and Mrs. Emmett Webber, a daughter of Mr. Webber by a former marriage; a sister, Mrs. George Bruce, residing east of Niles, 2 brothers, Chars. And George Dailey, residing near Cadillac, Mich. and Joseph Liff of Niles, a step brother, also mourn her loss.
    Mrs. Webber was woman of most estimable qualities, a kind friend, and her death is murned[sic] by many friends and especially in the immediate neighborhood.
    The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. H.C. Trabert officiating.  The remains will be enterred[sic] at Silver Brook cemetery besides those of her husband, who died just six months ago.

    Mrs. Elizabeth Webber, widow of the late Henry Webber, passed away about 11:30 o’clock last evening at her home 1202 Sycamore street after an illness covering a period of fourteen weeks of anemia.
    Mrs. Webber was born in Ohio, Sept. 27, 1850.  She was united in marriage to Henry Webber forty-three years ago and had since resided continuously in the house where her death occurred.

Geraldine Traphagan
January 19, 1931-December 29, 2009

Geraldine "Jeri" (Elliott) Miller Traphagan, 78, of Niles, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth, Indiana.

Jeri was born on January 19, 1931 in Marion, Indiana to the late David and Estella D. (Lewis) Elliott.

Jeri always showed a hard work ethic and was an entrepreneur. She worked for several years at Snelling Services before starting her own employment agency in Roseland and Elkhart. She also worked for many years in credit management in local hospitals and nursing homes. Jeri was currently employed by the Century Center where she greeted everyone with a smile as a hostess or parking booth attendant.

In her spare time Jeri enjoyed traveling and camping. She traveled both nationally and internationally. An avid fan of the Highlander Series, Jeri traveled to California where she met and became acquainted with Adrian Paul as well as other movie stars. Jeri loved all movies and always stayed current on movie stars and their lives. She also enjoyed European history and archeology. Jeri was a very determined and carefree lady. Although she was always busy, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always a priority and she always found time for them.

She is preceded in death by her parents, a son Jay Gordon Miller in 1988, two brothers Richard and Wayne Elliott and a sister Yvonne Hanks.

Jeri is survived by three daughters; Kathryn Miller Denaut of Plymouth, Indiana, Linda Miller of Niles, Ann (Josh Payne) Traphagan of Niles, ten grandchildren; Jeff G. Miller, Alycia and Danny Denaut, Ian and Nicole Miller, Lacey, Jay and Chad Wiemuth, Cody Schilke and Jacob Sams and three great-grandchildren; Kila Stamper, Lily Sherwood and Connor Denaut, and two nieces Judith Dixon Eldridge and Vicki Hanks Baker of Marion, IN.

A time of visitation will be held at Brown Funeral Home on Saturday, January 2, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., visitation one hour prior. A private interment will be held on Monday at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Ruth T. Bartlett

Ruth T. Bartlett, 99, of Columbus Boulevard, Sebring, Fla. died at 1:42 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 in Florida following a brief illness.

She was born Nov. 30, 1910 in Michigan City, Ind. to Gregory Christofer and Matilda (Horn) Brown. She attended school in Michigan City and lived in Niles until 2004, when she moved to Florida.

Ruth was employed in the offices of the Kawneer Corp. in Niles for 20 years. She was also a member of the Kawneer Kayettes, and enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

On May 18, 1934 in Niles, she married Irving r. Bartlett, who preceded her in death July 19, 1968. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Irene M. Canfield on July 19, 2004.

Surviving family includes a nephew, Edward H. (Helen) James of Sebring; Ed and Helen’s son, David James of Margate, Fla.; and David’s son, Ryan James of Lakeville, Ind.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010 at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles. A private committal will be held at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Contributions in memory of Ruth may be made to the National Humane Society.
