Roma V. (Hills) Dalenberg, 78, of Bardstown, Ky., formerly of Niles, died Saturday Nov. 24, 2001,  in Norton Hospice Palliative Care, Louisville, Ky., after an illness. She was born June 5, 1923. Survivors include two sons, Dennis D. of Chandler, Ariz., and Duane D. of Bardstown; and two brothers, Wilbur E. Hills of Vero Beach, Fla., and Armand B. Hills of Tampa, Fla. Private services will be held. There will be no visitation. Halbritter Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.

JOHN C. CUTHBERT DIES AT FARM HOME

Walton Road Resident for 27 Years Passes: Funeral in Niles Saturday.

John C. Cuthbert, 71, died Thursday night at his home on the Walton Road.He was born in Berrien Springs, Jan. 3, 1864 and in 1899 was married to Jemima Dressler who died Jan. 7, 1932.   He was the son of John and Phoebe Phillips Cuthbert.

Mr. Cuthbert had lived on the Walton Road for 27 years and had long been active in all community projects. He was a leading a member of the Grange and for several terms had been director of the school board.

Surviving are one daughter, Ruby M., who lives at home; one sister, Mrs. Mary E.. Hartline, Los Angeles; a brother, James H. Cuthbert, South Bend and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Price and Kiger funeral home Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock and burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery. The Rev. A.R. Kuehn will officiate. The body will be at the funeral home until the hour of the funeral.

CUTHBERT RITES TODAY

Services for John C. Cuthbert, who died Thursday at his home on the Walton road, were held this afternoon at 1:30 at the residence and at 2 o'clock at the Price and Kiger funeral home.  Friends of the family who acted as pallbearers were chris Steinbauer, Fred C. Franz, John Clark, Roy Walton, Fred Emmons and Ray Mell. The Rev. A.R. Kuehn officiated and burial was in Silverbrook cemetery.

Mrs. J.C. Cuthbert dies at farm home

Passes away at Bend of River Residence Early Thursday evening.

Mrs. Jemima Dressler Cuthbert, wife of John C. Cuthbert, died last evening at 7:40 in the bend of the river neighborhood. Mrs. Cuthbert had been in ill health for several weeks. On last Monday morning she suffered a stroke of paralysis and never fully regained consciousness.

Mrs. Cuthbert was born on Portage Prairie in Bertrand township on May 18, 1864, a daughter of Casper Gelnett and Sarah Ellen Shetterly Dressler and grew to young womanhood there.  She was married to Mr. Cuthbert in Buchanan in 1889. for the first few years following their marriage they resided in Chicago.   Upon returning in Michigan they located on a farm at Glendora and resided there until 1910 when they moved to the farm where her death occurred.

Mrs. Cuthbert is survived by her husband, one daughter, Miss Ruby, who is the teacher of the St. Joseph Valley School North of Niles and by the following, sisters and brothers, Mrs. Catherine Boone, Buchanan, George Dressler of Bakertown, Levi J. Dressler of Perth, N.D, and Mrs. Mary Rough of Niles.

Mrs. Cuthbert was an active member of the Bend of the River grange.

The funeral services will be held on Saturday, afternoon at 2:30 in the Troost and Augustine chapel. The Rev. g. W. Simon, pastor of the Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be made in Silverbook Cemetery.

Donna J. Cuthbert
June 29, 1927-May 20, 1950

Mrs. Donna Jean Cuthbert, 203 South Fourth Street, died this morning at 2:15 a.m. in Billings Hospital, Chicago, after an illness of one week. Mrs. Cuthbert’s death was due to leukemia.

Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Domer and her husband, Dale, all of Niles. Mrs. Cuthbert was born in Baker, ND on June 29, 1927 and came here in 1937 from North Dakota. She was employed by the Simplicity Pattern company.

Friends may call at Pifer’s funeral home, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. L. George Beacock, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Shirley Mae Cox
Nov. 5, 1928-Sept. 10, 1929

Shirley Maria Cox, 10 months, only daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Wesley Cox, 55 Marmont Street, died this morning about 7:30 in Pawating hospital where she was taken yesterday afternoon. She became ill on Saturday and spinal meningitis developed. She is survived by her parents and by two brothers, Frank and Lawrence. The funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Troost and Augustine Chapel. The Rev. A. C. Shaw, pastor of the Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will be made in Silverbrook cemetery. The child was born in Niles, Nov. 5, 1928.

Shirley Ann Courser
Feb. 12, 1933 – Dec. 31, 2003

Mrs. Shirley Ann Courser, 70, of Central Avenue, South Bend, died Dec. 31 in her home after an illness.

Her husband, Durward Blaine died October 1990. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Fredrick Amon and Cleland Amon, George Amon; and sisters, Betty Kirschbaum on June 19,1 995 and Patricia Skipper.

She is survived by sons, Dale Ray Miller of Pensacola, Fla., Richard Dennis Miller of South Bend, John Howard Miller of Niles, Frederick Blaine courser and David LeRoy courser, both of South Bend; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Maynard of St. Joseph, Margaret Treesh of South Bend, Nancy Cavitt of Niles; and brothers, LeRoy Amon of Riverdale, Ga.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2004 in Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, where friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
