Mrs. Gayl K. Platt, 84, 17 S. 7th St., died at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday in Pawating Hospital where she had been a patient two days.

She was born on March 26, 1876 in Chicago and had lived in Niles for 65 years. Her husband, Lester G. Platt, died in 1935.

She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Seepewa Reading Club and the St. Agnes Guild.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Harold G. Hanlin of Buchanan and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday at the Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. John G. Carlton officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Kiger and Halbritter Funeral Home.

NILES—Mrs. Caroline Porter, 86, of Grand Rapids, a former Niles resident, died Sunday.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon in the MJ. Clark Memorial Home chapel. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Silverbrook Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert M. Trenery officiating.

Harry B. Reed, 73, 1002 East Edwards St., retired Niles city fireman, died at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in the emergency room of Pawating hospital after being stricken ill at his home.

Mr. Reed was born Dec. 24, 1886, in Leslie and came to Niles 45 years ago from Hartford. He was a veteran of World War I, a life member of the Niles Elks Lodge and a member of the Niles post of the American Legion.

Surviving are: his widow, Elsie; a step-daughter, Mrs. Nina Carey, Lincoln, Neb.; a step-son, Delmar Bear, Pacific Grove, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Hazel Hutson, Skaneateles, N.Y., and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Pifer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Niles News in Brief: DEATH MRS. FRED RENZ

Mrs. Mary Renz, wife of Fred Renz, died this morning about 3:30 at the home six miles north of Niles, off M-60, in the vicinity of Pokagon. Her death followed an illness of about a week. Mrs. Renz was born on March 15, 1856 in Pokagon township and spent her entire life there. Her maiden name was Mary Sommers. She is survived by her husband, who is a brother of Scott Renz, of Niles and by two sisters, Mrs. Walter Rice and Mrs. Ella Early, both of Niles. The funeral services will be held in the Methodist church in Niles on Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Rev. W.W. Slee, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be made in Silver Brook cemetery.

YUST D. REUM, 78, MILTON, STRICKEN

Yust D. Reum, member of one of Niles' most prominent pioneer families, died Monday afternoon at 6:30 at his home in Milton township. He had been ill three years of heart trouble.

His parents, Earnest and Eva Zimmerman Reum, came to this country from Germany and settled in Milton township. Mr. Reum was born Sept. 23, 1862, in the farm home in which he died.

He was married Nov. 19, 1890, to Miss Bertha Roebeck at St. John's Evangelical church by the Rev. Rahn. They lived on a neighboring farm for a few years, but moved back to the old homestead 44 years ago and had lived there ever since.

Rites Thursday

Mr. Reum was a lifetime member of St. John's church. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Miller and Mrs. Mervin Morros, Milton township, a sister, Mrs. Chris Swartz; two brothers, Chris F. Reum and William C. Reum, all of Niles, and three grandchildren.

The body will be removed tonight from the Rutherford funeral home to the family home east of Niles, where friends may call. Private services for the family will be held in the home Thursday at noon.

At 1:30 the body will be removed to St. John's Evangelical church to lie in state until 2:30, the hour of the funeral. The Rev. Theo Eisen will officiate at the services and burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Yust Reum Rites Thursday in Home, St. John's Church

Funeral services at St. John's Evangelical church for Yust D. Reum, 78, who died Monday in his home in Milton township, will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:30.

Pallbearers will be Gustave Reum, South Bend; Fred Reum, Frank Reum, Harry Beehler, Wallace Beehler and Robert Roebeck, Niles. The Rev. Theo Eisen will officiate at the services and burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Mr. Reum was a member of one of Niles' early pioneer families and died in the farm home where he was born. Friends may call at the family home east of Niles, where private services will be conducted for the family at noon.

LENARD RICKARD, 85, DIES TODAY

Lenard Rickard, 85, died this morning at 4:45 in the hospital at Berrien Center after an illness of seven months. His home was at 612 ½ South Lincoln avenue.

Mr. Rickard was born in Philadelphia Jan. 23, 1856 and came to Niles in 1918. he was married March 5, 1878 to Miss Ida Morris, who survives.

He is also survived by five children, Howard H. Rickard, Niles, Walter F. Rickard, Chicago, Charles H. Rickard, Philadelphia, William Rickard, St. Joseph, and Mrs. Harry Huffman, Berrien Center; a brother, Harry Rickard, Philadelphia, and 11 grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home where services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:30. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Niles News in Brief: RICKARD RITES TODAY

Funeral services for Lenard Rickard, 85, who died Monday morning after an illness of seven months, were conducted this afternoon at 2:30 in the Pifer funeral home with the Rev. Guy W. Simon officiating. Pallbearers were Melvin Huffman, Cleo Huffman, Robert Huffman, Claude Hoover, Edward Erickson and Chester Erickson. Burial was in Silverbrook cemetery.

NILES—Graveside services were held at Silverbrook Cemetery today for Florence Rose, 90, who died Thursday at Florida Lutheran Retirement Home at DeLand, Fla. A retired nurse at Kalamazoo State Hospital, she was born Aug. 25, 1885, at Vandalia. She moved to DeLand seven years ago.

Mrs. Rose's husband, John, died Feb. 15, 1969. She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy McLean of Ferndale, Mich., a daughter-in-law, Ernestine Rose of DeLand, a sister, Sally Welburn of Three Rivers, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Vincent Anderson, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church, officiated at the graveside services and local arrangements were made by the Pifer Chapel of the Swem-Smith Funeral Home.
