Mary Meyers, 78, Niles Ex-Resident, Dies in California

Death of Mrs. Mary Ives Meyers, 78, on March 20 in Long Beach, Calif., after a year's illness, was reported here today. Mrs. Meyers was a former resident of Niles, living at 318 North Third street. She went to Long Beach two years ago.

Born in Niles township Feb. 28, 1866, she had lived here all her life until going to California.

Surviving are the husband, Eugene; a daughter, Mrs. Willis Ridinger, Long Beach, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Edith Greak, South Bend, and Mrs. Edward Moritz, Stone Lake, Ind.; and a brother, Albert Ives, at the Berrien Center hospital.

The body is expected to arrive in Niles Monday afternoon and will be taken to the Price and Kiger chapel. Tentative arrangements have been made for funeral services there Tuesday at 2 with the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Mrs. Meyers was a member of G.A.R. Circle No. 45 and the Pythian Sisters.

Body to Arrive

Body of Mrs. Mary Ives Meyers, 78, who died March 20 in Long Beach, Calif., is expected to arrive in Niles today and will be taken to the Price and Kiger chapel. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Mrs. Meyer[sic] was a resident of Niles until she moved to Long Beach two years ago.

Note:  Obituary has last name spelled Meyers but cemetery record and death record spell as Meyer.

Robert F. Hames, Jr., age 77 years of Niles, died at 5:20 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013 at his home following a battle with cancer.

He was born on February 26, 1936 in Decatur, Alabama to Robert Franklin and Bertha Ellen (Osborn) Hames, Sr., and has lived in Niles since 1953, coming from Alabama. He was first employed at the French Paper Company in Niles, and then had a twenty-year career with the National-Standard Company.

Bob bowled on several area leagues, and enjoyed golfing; restoring, maintaining, and driving classic cars; and country music, especially the late Elvis Presley. He had a great talent for repairing various items, and for restoring furniture in his home workshop.

On February 18, 1956 in Niles he married the former Clementina Mary Pullano with whom he celebrated the fifty-first anniversary of their wedding prior to her death on Nov. 6, 2007.

Surviving family includes their children, Robert F. (& Deb) Hames III of Niles, and Denise Hames of Alto, Michigan; grandchildren Elyse Horak and Ian Horak; sisters-in-law, Isabel Deschaaf and Rosemary (& Don) Ball, and two nephews and four nieces.

The funeral service for Robert F. Hames, Jr. will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 27, 2013 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the Rev. Michael Smith of Hope Community Church officiating. Committal will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at Noon on Friday at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Bob may be made to Hospice at Home.

Verlin “Bert” C. Dillman, 81, of Niles passed away at Westwoods of Niles on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013.

Bert was born to the late Herman and Ina Belle (Hiner) Dillman on April 2, 1932, in Niles.

On Dec. 5, 1953, he married Elda Mae Yaw at a ceremony at Grace United Methodist Church (formerly Evangelical United Brethren) in Niles.

For over 35 years, Bert worked as a truck driver for Spector and Roadway Trucking, retiring in 1994. In his spare time and after retirement he enjoyed genealogy, dancing, and was naturally gifted with music. He was a charter member and past camp commander for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War; Camp 85 Berrien County, Mich. Bert was also mechanically talented and could fix anything.

Preceding Bert are his parents, a daughter Deborah Dillman and his sister Norma Thomas.

He is survived by his wife, Elda Dillman of Niles, his daughter Valerie (Mike) Wurn of Osceola, a son Rex Dillman of Buchanan, his brother Ray (Frances) Dillman of Niles, a brother-in law Gerald (Beverlie) Thomas of Niles and a granddaughter Kristen (Sean) Hood of Mishawaka, Ind.

David A. Lehman, Sr., age 73 years of Elkhart, Indiana died at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at Hospice House of Elkhart following an extended illness.

He was born on April 16, 1940 in Elkhart to Merrill Dwight and Mary Alice (Hick) Lehman. He was graduated from Concord High School, and lived in Elkhart most of his life. He was employed as a butcher in several area butcher shops.

David enjoyed working on race cars which competed on local race tracks. He also enjoyed country music and driving tractor-trailer rigs.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by a half-brother, Ralph Eby and half-sister, Maxine Keppel.

On September 16, 2007 he married the former Anna Lee Payne, who survives. Also surviving are his children, David A. Lehman, Jr., Mark A. Lehman, and Susan K. Lehman, all of Elkhart, and Ralph M. Lehman of Leesburg, Florida; grandchildren Margaret, Tori, David III, Jeremy, Sarah, Ashley, Mary Alice, Ida Mae, Erica Naomi Lynn, and Dale Eugene; and Anna’s children, Lora LaRosa and Bruce Moore, both of Michigan, and Kathy Ellingson of Niles, Michigan; grandchildren Jenny, Elizabeth, and Courtney; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for David A. Lehman, Sr. will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the Rev. Randy Pearman of Bethel Baptist Church officiating. Committal will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of David may be made to the American Heart Association.

JO HAND, RETIRED FARMER, STRICKEN

Jo Hand, 86, retired farmer, died in his home at 1311 Regent street, Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 after an illness of eight months. He was born in Berrien county Dec. 3, 1857, the son of the late Michael and Marietta hand, and came to Niles from Berrien Springs 36 years ago.

He was married to Ella Green, Dec. 14, 1881. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary last December.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Carl W. Dick, Niles; a son, Merl Hand, Berrien Springs; four grandchildren, Joseph A. Hand, Lakewood, Ohio; Robert M. Hand, with the army in England; Leroy W. Hand, in the navy overseas, and Carl H. Dick, Niles, and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call at the Price and Kiger chapel, where services will be held  Friday at 2:30 with the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

AID AT FUNERAL

Pallbearers for the funeral of Jo Hand, 86, retired farmer who died in this home at 1311 Regent street Tuesday afternoon, will be Harry Dick, Roscoe Lybrook, William Maunder, J.W. Snyder, S.M. Simpson, and E.E. Garlanger. Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:30 in the Price and Kiger funeral chapel.

ETHEL HENDERSHOT TAKEN BY DEATH

Mrs. Ethel Hendershot, 74, wife of George Hendershot, 1350 Regent street, died early this morning in her home after an illness of three years.

Mrs. Hendershot was born on the Isle of Guernsey near England June 4, 1869, the daughter of William and Selina Maunder, who brought her to this country when she was a year old.

Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. E.J. Liebetrau and Mrs. Elmer Sherman, Niles; two grandsons, William Liebetrau, machinist's mate, stationed at San Diego, Calif., and Richard Liebetrau, Niles, and two brothers, Will Maunder and John Maunder, Niles.

Friends may call at the Price and Kiger chapel. Funeral services will be conducted there at 2 Monday afternoon by the Rev. Harry L. Nicholson. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Huffman Girl Dies; Funeral Thursday

Nancey Huffman, infant daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Cleo Huffman. . .[illegible] . .born Wednesday in Pawating Hospital died Saturday night at 9 in the hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Price and Kiger funeral home  Tuesday afternoon at 2 by the Rev. Theodore Laesch, of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.
