CHARLES GEIDEMAN, GROCER 24 YEARS, STRICKEN IN HOME

Illness of Six Months Claims Life of Civic and Business Leader

Charles B. Geideman, 69, active in Niles Business and civic life for many years and a life-long resident here, died this morning at 1:10 in his home at 509 Pokagon street after an illness which lasted six months. He had been in poor health for more than two years.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Geideman, pioneer settlers in Niles. Twenty-four years ago, Mr. Geideman and his son, Lewis Henry, founded a grocery and meat market which they had operated at the same location ever since.

Always active in Niles civic and business affairs, he assisted in reorganization of the First National bank and was named on the borard of directors at that time. He had been on the board since then.

He is survived by his wife, Emma; the son,; two sisters, Mrs. Dora Toney and Mrs. J.B. Keller; five brothers, Henry, Edward, Rudolph, George and Frank, all of Niles.

Funeral services will be Wednesday afternoon but Arrangements are incomplete as yet. Friends may call at the Rutherford funeral home.

He was a member of St. John's Evangelical church, Niles Elks and Odd Fellows lodges.

GEIDEMAN SERVICES

Funeral for Charles B. Geideman will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 in the St. John's Evangelical church by the Rev. Theo Eisen. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery and the Niles Elks lodge will conduct committal service.  Friends may call at the Rutherford funeral home until Wednesday noon at the church until funeral time. Pallbearers will be Henry J., Edward J., Frank J. Rudolph, Jr., and George Geideman, and John B. Keller.  Geideman's grocery store, 933 North Fifth street, will be closed from Wednesday noon until Thursday morning.

Frank J. Geideman, 75, of 521 South Third Street, retired New York Central Railroad locomotive engineer, died at 10:35 a.m., Thursday in Pawating Hospital where he had been admitted several hours previous. He had been in poor health for some time.

Mr. Geideman, a life member of the Niles Elks Lodge and a member of the Railroad Pioneer Association, was born Aug. 22, 1882, in Niles and had lived his entire lifetime in this community. He was retired from the railroad in 1946. His wife, Martha, preceded him in death in 1942.

Surviving are three sons, Russell, Fred and John Geideman, all of Niles; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Meyer, also of Niles; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; a sister, Mrs. John Keller, of Niles, and three brothers, Henry, Rudolph and George Geideman, all of Niles.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday in the Pifer Funeral Home with the Rev. Herbert Meussling, pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ [Evangelical and Reformed], officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home

SERVICE FOR MRS. HARDER

Mrs. Adeline Harder, who died Saturday, was buried this afternoon in Silverbrook cemetery after services at 2:30 in the Pifer funeral home. Mrs. Harder was the oldest member of the First Presbyterian church in Niles. She was the widow of John Harder and widely known in the Barron lake district.

Harrington, Lillie Hursh

Mrs. Lillie Hursh Harrington, 81, resident of the Niles community since she was three years old, died at 1 p.m. Saturday in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Richard Stoll, . . .[illegible].

Mrs. Harrington was born March 8, 1876, in Pennsylvania and was married Sept. 12, 1894, to Frank A. Harrington, who died on Dec. 30, 1956.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Ill-a-he Til-a-Kum Club.

Surviving besides her daughter are: a son, Beryl Harrington, of Niles; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.  A son, Almer Harrington, preceded her in death in 1923.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First Presbyterian Church with the pastor,  the Rev. John MacLachlan, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kiger-Halbritter Funeral Home here.

Hathaway, John W.

SOUTH BEND—John W. Hathaway, 67, of South Bend, a former Niles resident, died at 7 a.m. today at his home after an extended illness.

A member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, he was a retired employe of the University of Notre Dame.

He was born Oct. 15, 1908 in Detroit and had lived in South Bend since 1958, coming from Niles.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Halbritter Funeral Home with the Rev. W.L. Daniel of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call from  7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

Hill, Albert C.

NILES-- Albert C. Hill, 77, 2714 West St., died at 9 a.m. Sunday at Pawating Hospital after an extended illness.

He was a retired foreman of the Oliver Corp. and a member of Fulkerson Park Baptist Church.

He was born Jan. 30, 1899 in Keeler, Mich., and had lived here since 1925, coming from Dowagiac.

On Aug. 11, 1927 at South Bend, he married the former Elizabeth Wechnerowski who survives.

Also surviving is a son, Dale Hill of Niles; three daughters, Mrs. Norma Krisher, Mrs. Joan Weaver and Mrs. Pat Sallee, all of Niles, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services for Mr. Hill will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Halbritter Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Whiteford, pastor of Fulkerson Park Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call after noon on Tuesday at the Halbritter Funeral Home.

 

Robbins, James H.

NILES—James H. Robbins, 75, 1348 Sheffield Ave., died at 8:33 a.m. Sunday at Pawating Hospital after an extended illness.

He was a 27-year veteran of the city fire department, retiring in 1958.

Mr. Robbins was born Oct. 23, 1900 in Otia, Mich., and had lived in Niles since 1915, coming from Solon Springs, Wis.

He is survived by his wife Vera M. Robbins; two daughters, Mrs. Johnie (Marjorie) Rodebush and Mrs. William (Barbara) Ortmann, both of Niles; a brother, Charlie Robbins, also of Niles; six sisters, Mrs. Alta Hahn, Mrs. Edna Siderits, Mrs. Frances Newman, Mrs. Vivian Ferris and Mrs. Minnie Wiggins, all of Niles, and Mrs. Alice Farrell, of Albuquerque, N.M. , five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 

Services for Mrs.[sic] Robbins will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Halbritter Funeral Home, with the  Rev. Paul Ferry of the Church of God officiating.  Burial will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m.  Tuesday at the Halbritter Funeral Home.

Acting Fire Chief Capt. Marlon Fuller has announced that the flag at he fire house has been lowered to Half-mast in memory of Mr. Robbins.
