Death of Harry Dodge

Our well-known young fellow citizen, Harry Dodge, son of Mr. Samuel S. Dodge, whose severe illness and recent return from Colorado we mentioned a few weeks ago, died last night at 10 o'clock, of consumption, in his 30th year. Mr. Dodge was a native of this pace, an excellent young man, and had held important trusts under the American Express Company.--His funeral will take place from the Presbyterian Church on Saturday afternoon next at 2 o'clock.

Harry Dodge, son of S.S. Dodge, who has been on the decline with consumption for the past year or more, died at the residence of his father in this city on Wednesday evening last. Harry was one of our most highly respected young men, with the brightest of prospects for future life, but, alas, when the fell monster disease, consumption, takes hold, the fairest and best must yield to its continuous wasting process. Harry's death, though daily expected for some time, will be sad and chilling news to his many warm and life long friends in this as well as in many other places where he was known.

John Davis

John Davis, who has been a citizen of this city for a great many years, and who has been widely known throughout the country as a first-class manufacturer of crackers, died very suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday evening last. The day previous he had been to South Bend on business, and in the forepart of the day upon which he died he was out upon the streets, but in the afternoon complained some and died about 7 o'clock in the evening. Mr. Davis leaves an interesting family of children to mourn his untimely end.

Dr. John Salee

--Dr. John Salee, son of the late Stephen Salee, died yesterday, of consumption. Dr. Salee had been living at Spearville, Kansas, for some time past, and was returning here, when his death occurred on the road. He will be buried from the residence of his brother-in-law, Wm. B. Davis, to-morrow morning at 10:30 o'clock.

Dr. John Salee, who was well known to many of our citizens, having studied medicine with Dr. Loomis, some years ago, died on his way home from Kansas, on Wednesday evening last. Dr. Salee had been ailing for the past year or two with the consumption, and about a year ago, thinking a change of climate would be beneficial, he went to Kansas, but of no avail; he gradually declined, and realizing the near approach of death, he desired to come home. His family who were with him started for this place, hoping he might arrive safe, but, alas, the fatigue of the journey was too much for his feeble constitution, and when almost home he quietly breathed his last. Mr. Salee was an honorable and highly respected gentleman and physician. He was in the 42nd year of his age.

Simeon S. Bradbury

Died at his residence, one mile south of Niles, at 2 o'clock Monday morning March 29th, aged sixty-five years. Mr. Bradbury was born in Butler county Ohio, Jan. 9, 1815, and came with the family to Niles in September, 1832, and the family settled on the farm the November following. Simeon was the oldest of the children, eight sons and one daughter, and to a great extent was the manager and supporter of the family for many years. He was industrious and frugal, and thus secured a comfortable home for the family in their childhood and youth, and for his parents, his sister and himself in advanced years. He was never married. His father died about fifteen years ago, and his mother died about eight years ago. The brothers are widely scattered from Canada to California. He was a good and upright citizen and his loss will be greatly felt.

The funeral services were on Wednesday, conducted by Rev. Dr. Bailey.

 --Mr. Simeon R. Bradbury, a notice of whose death appears in another column, will be sadly missed by very many in the city, who have been accustomed to see him almost daily for many years. Thus one by one are passing away the sturdy pioneers of the county but they leave behind them a living evidence of their earnest toil in converting a wild and rugged country into productive farms and dotted with happy homes.

 The many friends of Simeon R. Bradbury will be sorry to learn that he is no more, he peacefully breathed his last on Monday morning last, after an illness of some ten days, with typhoid pneumonia, in the 66th year of his age. Mr. Bradbury was one of our most industrious and enterprising farmers, and by his industry and good management he secured for himself a good home and evrything[sic[ around to make him and sister, who has been his companion, comfortable and happy. But just as one gets things in the shape to take world easy and enjoy their declining days, death calls and takes them hence. Mr. Bradbury was a much respected citizen, and an obliging and honored neighbor, he will be missed in the community.

Carl Allen

Carl Allen, son of By. Allen, formerly of this city, died very unexpectedly in this city on Wednesday morning last. He had been in Chicago for some time past following his trade—house painting—and at which place he was taken sick with the dropsy, which rendered him unfit to work, and which gradually affected him more and more. His doctors and friends thought a change of place might be beneficial to him, hence he came to Niles a few weeks ago, and for some time felt better. On Wednesday morning last he ate a hearty breakfast, and a short time after eating he set up in bed and said he would get up and walk around. He commenced putting on his pantaloons, and when he had them about half on he fell over and expired in a few seconds from the effects of dropsy of the heart. He was a young man not over twenty-one or twenty -two years of age.

Obituary of Ronnie Dean DeShazer

Ronnie Dean DeShazer, 66, of Niles, had his sunset at his home on January 14, 2020. Ronnie was born on July 11, 1953, in Niles, to the late Fred Pearson and Ethel Mae Maxwell. He grew up in a large family, with thirteen brothers and sisters. Ronnie graduated from Brandywine High School and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1974. He proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in 1976. After his service, Ronnie joined M&M Railroad, where he constructed railroads, eventually retiring in 2012. Ronnie cared deeply about his family and placed them first in his life. He also greatly enjoyed spending time outdoors, either gardening or fishing. He liked to build model cars and put together puzzles. He loved listening to music, and could often be found dancing to whatever music was playing. He found joy in being able to prepare food, both by cooking and grilling. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Farries Maxwell Jr., and Freddie Pearson. Ronnie is survived by the love of his life, Margo Reum of Niles; children, Angela Parchman of Jackson, Tennessee, Candy (Noah) Smith of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Charles Thomas of Chicago, Illinois, Cortez Parchman of Niles, Michigan, Heather (Jeff) Lavigne of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Lisa Phelps of Niles, Michigan, Ronnie Barnaby of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Roxanne Phelps, of Niles, Michigan; grandchildren, Akyla Barnaby, Andrew Smith, Brian Macklin Jr., Brittany Parchman, Corterryana Parchman, Cortez Parchman Jr., Courtney Parchman Sr., Danielle Marshall, Devarron Thomas, Jasmine K.B.
