Niles man dies following fight
A Niles man died Saturday of an apparent heart attack during an altercation at the White House restaurant in Clay Township.
A St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department spokesman said Charles A. Zavor, 40, of 210 S. 15th St., died en route to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. He was pronounced dead on arrival at 10:22 p.m.
Police said Zavor and his wife were eating at the restaurant at 42131 U.S. 31 N., when two intoxicated men entered and made derogatory remarks about Mrs. Zavor.
An altercation erupted, police said, and the victim and another man fell into a plate glass window, and were cut. Police said a final determination has not been made, but it is believed Zavor died of heart attack.
Police said the investigation is continuing and the prosecutor will be contacted to determine possible charges.
Mr. Zavor was born April 10, 1937, in Mishawaka, and lived his lifetime in this area. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Korean War. At the time of his death he was a truck driver for B&L Motor Freight.
He is survived by his wife, the former Carolyn S. Glick, whom he married Aug. 4, 1973, in Niles.
Also surviving are his step-father, Gerald Mathias of Niles; a son, Charles, at home; a brother, Jerry Mathias of Niels; and two sisters,Mrs. Esther Steingster of Mishawaka and Mrs. Patricia Gerretson of Mishawaka.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Halbritter Funeral Home. The Rev. Larry L. Whiteford of the Fulkerson Park Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.
