Alfred Chamberlain Jr.
December 29, 1937-January 3, 1986

Alfred Lewis Chamberlain Jr., 48, 633 Clark St., Niles, died at 11:55 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend, Ind., after an extended illness.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was employed at Simplicity Pattern co.

He was born Dec. 29, 1937 in Niles and lived his lifetime here.

Surviving are his father, Alfred L. Chamberlain, Niles; his grandmother, Emma Fleck, Niles; three sons, John Nemeth of Niles, Richard and Michael Chamberlain of Niles; a daughter, Pamela Perkins of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a brother, Larry Chamberlain of Luther; two sisters, Nancy Hildebrand of Cassopolis and Jeannette McCormick of Three Rivers; and two grandchildren.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Halbritter Funeral Home, Rev. Robert L. Livingston, interim pastor of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Kalamazoo, will officiate. Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Halbritter Funeral Home.

Leonard Cauffman
March 25, 1863-Sept. 26, 1950

Leonard Cauffman, 87, of Bristol, Ind., died at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday in his home. He had been ill for one month.

Cauffman was born in New Troy on March 25, 1863 and lived in Niles most of his life.

Surviving is a son, Arthur of Bristol; a daughter, Mrs. Mable Rither of South Bend and five grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Kiger Funeral Home where services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. T.M. Greenhoe officiating. Burial will be in the Silverbrook Cemetery.

 

Harry Cauffman
1899-1922

The body of Harry Cauffman was brought to Niles today by his father, Fred Leggett from Wajamentha, MI. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the residence of his parents, on North Fifth Street. Rev. P.G. Saffran will officiate. Burial will occur at Silverbrook Cemetery. The young man is survived by his parents, five sisters, Mrs. Julius Wedel, Bernice, Joseph, Mary and Myrtle; a brother, Victor, all of Niles and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Reinke.

John A. Cart
1859-Jan. 16, 1921

Well known farmer a victim of Heart Disease and Dropsy.

John A. Cart died Sunday afternoon about 6:15 o’clock at the Clark Hospital in Buchanan where he had been a patient for two weeks. His death followed an illness with heart trouble and dropsy.

The body was brought to the late home on Reddick Street today where funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock W. F. Putnam will officiate.  Burial will occur at Silverbrook cemetery beside the body of his wife who died July 11, 1920.

Mr. Cart was born in New Paris, Ind., in 1859, for the past 32 years in he had resided in Niles Township where he engaged in farming. He was a stalwart Republican and was frequently the choice of his party for office in that township.

Mr. Cart had no near surviving relatives. Since the death of Mrs. Cart, a niece of the latter, Mrs. May Roebeck, a daughter of the late Edward Blanchard has kept house for him and John Datzel has assisted Mr. Cart in running the farm. John Blanchard Jr. of Niles, Henry Blanchard of Waco, Texas and Mrs. Nellie Batchelor of Howard Township are brothers and sisters of Mrs. Cart whose maiden name was Martha Blanchard.

Wyman Carpenter
July 17, 1861-October 15, 1939

Wyman Carpenter, 78, Dies Sunday at home on Route 2.

Wyman Carpenter 78, resident of Milton township and vicinity all his life, died Sunday morning in his home on route 2 east of Niles. He had been ill three months.

Except for six year employment with the Grand Trunk railway lines he had spent his entire life in farming.

Surviving are his wife, Addie; a daughter, Mary Jane at home; a brother, Alva Carpenter, Niles and a sister, Mrs. Flora Martin, Elkhart.

He was born in Milton Township July 17, 1861, and was married in 1883 to his wife who survives.

Services will be at the home Tuesday afternoon at 2 with the Rev. G. W. Simon officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. The I.O.O.F, of which he was a member will conduct the committal services.

Sophia Carpenter
March 6, 1860-April 7, 1951

Mrs. Sophia Carpenter, 932 South Thirteenth Street, died at 5:15 a.m. today in her home after an illness of 10 days.

Surviving is a son, Carl Carpenter, and two daughters, Mrs. Alma Shook and Mrs. Louise Moneysmith, both of Niles; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and thee great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, George Kelner of Wawaka, Ind.

Mrs. Carpenter was born on March 6, 1860 in Noble county Wawaka, Ind., and came here from the Community in 1883. She was a member of the First  Methodist church.

Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday by the Rev. L. George Beacock, Methodist pastor. Burial will be in Silverbook Cemetery.
