Niles News in Brief: FUNERAL FRED TOPPING

Funeral services for Fred Topping were held this afternoon with Rev. G.W. Simon, pastor of the Presbyterian church in charge. Mr. and Mrs. Rex Leach sang. Burial was made in Silver Brook cemetery. Mr. Topping who died on Wednesday was a son of Mrs. Carrie Topping, 325 Huron street.

PAPER MILL WORKER DROPS DEAD WHILE ON WAY TO HIS WORK
Valentine Gutherline Found Dead at Early Hour This Morning

Valentine Gutherline, 1009 Sycamore street, dropped dead this morning as he was walking to his work for the day at the French paper mills where he had been employed for 25 to 30 years. He had reached Seventh street near Broadway when he was stricken. He was found by an attendant enroute to his work at a filling station who went to the home of S.B. Codding and notified the police. It was about 6 o'clock when the body was found.

Gutherline was born in Germany about 75 years ago. He had been a resident of Niles for nearly 50 years. Surviving him are two brothers and two sisters. One brother and one sister live in Germany and the other brother, Frederick Gutherline lives on a farm east of Barron Lake and the other sister, Mrs. Carl Yung lives on what is known as the Beeson farm south of Niles.

The deceased has been in ill health for some time and his step-grandchildren had been in attendance upon him. Yesterday when one of the step-grandchildren, Helen Luke called at him to inquire how he felt he told her that he was so much better that he would go to work this morning if he felt as well this morning. When she went to his home before going to her own work this morning he had left the house.

Justice Hardy Langston was called to the scene in the capacity of coroner but he decided that an inquest was not necessary, Gutherline evidently having been stricken with a heart attack.

The funeral plans are not completed but the body will be at the Troost and Augustine undertaking rooms until Friday morning.

Niles News in Brief: FUNERAL V. GUTHERLINE

Funeral services for Valentine Gutherline who dropped dead Wednesday morning near Seventh and Broadway, will be held in his home at 1009 Sycamore Street tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. G.W. Webbink, pastor of St. John's Evangelical church, will conduct the services in English. Burial will be made in Silver Brook cemetery.

OVERCOME WHILE AT WORK, JESS HERMAN DIES IN FEW MINUTES
Father of Three Small Children is Stricken in Heart Attack

Jess Herman, 45, father of three small children, died suddenly with a heart attack shortly before noon today while employed with three other laborers in making repairs to the concrete driveway of the Standard Oil filling station at Third street and Broadway.

Herman, who resided in an upper apartment at 104 ½ E. Main street, had complained of not feeling well when he went to work with William and Frank Susan and George Whalen. About 11:40 he suddenly collapsed while sawing a board. Assisted to his feet by William Susan, he walked unassisted across Third street to Susan's parked car and was standing talking to Susan about going home for the day when he toppled to the ground unconscious.

A Niles physician was hastily summoned.. He arrived in less than five minutes to find Herman beyond help.

The body was removed to the Rutherford Funeral Home. Besides the widow, Mrs. Athen Herman, the deceased is survived by his three children, Marie, Franklin and Kugler.

Niles News in Brief: FUNERAL JESSE HERMAN

Funeral services for Jesse Herman, 55, who dropped dead at Third and Broadway Monday morning, will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock in the Rutherford chapel. The Rev. Sumner Young, pastor of the Evangelical church will officiate. Burial will be made in Silver Brook cemetery. In connection with an account [of the] death it was stated that three small children survived him. This was in error as his children, two sons and a daughter are grown to manhood and womanhood. They are Ann of Akron, Ohio, Ernest of Logansport, Ind., and Murray of Chicago. Marie Vandyke of Niles is a stepdaughter. A widow also survives and the following sisters and brother, Mrs. Mary Sparks, Lafayette, Ind., Mrs. Clifford Boose, Niles and Ernest Herman of Chicago.

WM. JOHNSTON IS TAKEN BY DEATH
Former Niles Policeman Dies at Barron Lake Home Friday P.M.

William Johnston, 73, a former member of the Niles police department, died on Friday afternoon at his home near Barron lake. He had been in ill health for about four years. Previous to moving to Niles about 14 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Johnston lived in Chesterton, Ind. For a number of years after coming to Niles they resided on east Ferry street.

Mr. Johnston was born in New York on May 27, 1958[sic]. He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Helen Johnston and by two sons, Theodore Johnston of Muskegon and Lorenzo Johnston of Niles, also a grandson, Roy Johnston of Muskegon.

Fraternally Mr. Johnston was a member of the Niles lodge of Elks and of the Berrien county lodge, No. 6, I.O.O.F., and each of these fraternities will participate in the funeral services on Monday afternoon. The Elks will participate of the services in the Rutherford Funeral Home with the Rev. W.W. Slee, pastor of the Methodist church as the officiating minister. The Odd Fellows will be in charge of the comittals[sic] services in Silver Brook cemetery. The services in the chapel will be held at 1:30, fast time. The friends may call at the funeral home to view the body. Mr. Johnston was a member of the Methodist church.

Mr. Johnston was appointed a member of the police department by the Mayor Homer Carr, deceased.

Niles News in Brief: FUNERAL OF WM. JOHNSTON

Funeral services for William Johnston were held this afternoon. The [illegible] of the Methodist church, officiated with the officiating minister. Members of the Elks lodge read their funeral service in the chapel and Odd Fellow ritual committal service was followed at Silver Brook cemetery where burial was made. Mr. and Mrs. Rex Leach sang. Mr. Johnston died on Friday afternoon at his home near Barron lake after about four years of ill health.

Funeral Services Are Held in South Bend Today for Mrs. Geyer

Funeral services were held this afternoon for Mrs. Ella Ribble Geyer, wife of Rev. Albin C. Geyer, retired minister who died in the St. Joseph hospital Friday afternoon at 4:45. The services were held in her home with the Rev. B.D. Beck, district superintendent of the Methodist church officiating. Burial was made in Silver Brook cemetery in Niles.

Mrs. Geyer, daughter of Tobias and Rebecca Ribble, was born at Niles and educated in the public schools here. She was untied in marriage with A.C. Geyer, a school teacher in the community and shortly afterward he entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal church. Together they began the ministry on South Bend c circuit thirty-nine years ago. Among the churches they served were the Thorntown church and st. Paul's church, Lafayette, Ind.; the Fourth street church, Sterling, Ill.; First Church in Alton, Ill.; and the First Church in Carbondale, Ill.

Last September Mr. and Mrs. Geyer deciding to retire from active life, returned to South Bend, locating on Dixie highway north in Wooddale.

Surviving Mrs. Geyer, besides her husband, are three daughters, Mrs. W.W.H. Mustaine, Albany, N.Y.' Mrs. H.P. Maas, New York City, and Mrs. C.R. Megowen, Toledo, O.; also two brothers, Amos F. Ribble, Niles and John J., South Bend and three sisters, Mrs. B.F. Willard, South Bend, Mrs. C.H. Johnson and Mrs. Julia Childs, Niles.

Funeral services for the daughter, age 11 months, of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gross, who died this morning at their home in Howard township, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Troost and Augustine chapel. The Rev. W. Keith Chidister, rector of Trinity Episcopal church, will officiate. Burial will be made in Silver Brook cemetery. Mr. Gross formerly lived at Third and Pokagon streets in Niles.
