April 1, 2021

The year 2020 will not be forgotten! Covid may have changed the way our group operated but it did not curtail our efforts. Weather permitting, we held our meetings outside. We adjusted our volunteer work projects but our work continued. Throughout it all, we were encouraged to see the increased interest the community has shown in the improvements made to Silverbrook Cemetery.

Due to the popularity of our annual fall tour, and the crowd it would attract, Covid again required that we get creative. We were fortunate to have Mollie Kruck Watson of the Niles History Center work with our members to produce a virtual tour of the cemetery. Mollie featured both individuals and also facts about Silverbrook itself. It is entertaining and educational and can be viewed on our website.

Once again, Dr. Charles Chauncy Wells and his grandson, Ryan, who is now 11 and an 8th grader in Oak Park, IL, printed the enclosed envelopes on their 1926 Chandler and Price letterpress. Two years ago, as a 9 year old, Ryan helped his grandfather. This year, at age 11, he set the letterpress himself.

As you may know, Silverbrook is plotted in block sections. In an effort to assist interested parties in locating burial locations, we have purchased signs designating the various block sections. Look for these signs to be installed this spring.

We are proud of our efforts to support our historic cemetery and help the City of Niles honor our veterans and provide a peaceful final resting place for our citizens. Your membership and donations to our efforts are very much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Ginny Tyler
