D.L. Boardman Dies in Buchanan

 

Buchanan, May 29--Delbert L. Boardman, 82, widely known dry goods merchant in Buchanan, died at 9:45 a.m. today at his home after an illness of several months.

Born March 16, 1864, in Caltaraugus county,  New York, he was graduated from Chamberlain institute in New York state, where he taught for four years. Coming to Michigan in 1889, he started a business in Three Oaks, opening a store in Buchanan in 1891.  He moved to Wyoming, where he opened a store in 1902, returning to Buchanan and buying his former store the following year.

He was married Oct. 7, 1891, in Three Oaks to Miss Kate Sherrill, who died 12 years ago. Surviving are a foster daughter, Mrs. O. Gaylord Marsh, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Friday

Boardman held several public offices in Buchanan and was a member of the First Presbyterian church, the Buchanan Masonic lodge, and the Modern Woodmen of America.  He was a charter member of the Buchanan Lions club.

Friends may call at the Swem funeral home, where services will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m.  A nephew, the Rev. Harold T. Reese, will conduct the services, assisted by the Rev. [illegible] D. McNeal, pastor of the Buchanan Presbyterian church.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

On the morning of the 15th instant, in this city, after a severe illness, EVA L., daughter of Simon and Ambrosia Bierbauer, aged 2 years, 9 months and 25 days.

James Ballard Dies Suddenly

 

James E. Ballard, 70, died suddenly Friday at 10 p.m. in his home, 1537 Clarendon avenue.

His was born Feb. 6, 1876, in Standish, Mich., and came to Niles 23 years ago from Tawas City, where he had been owner and editor of the Tawas Herald. He was married to Miss Mamie Carolyn Peterson in 1909 in LeRoy, Mich.

In Niles he had been for several years the proprietor of the Ballard Print shop.

He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, and the Royal Arch Masons of Tawas City. He was a Spanish-American war veteran.

Survivors are his widow; one son, James E. Ballard, Jr., St. Joseph; three daughters, Mrs. Howard Anthony, Benton Harbor; Mrs. Edith Ostrander, New York City; and Miss Ruth Ballard, Long Beach, Cal.

Serices[sic] will be held Monday at 3 p.m. from the Pifer funeral home, with the Rev. T.M. Greenhoe officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Glenn Todd Haynes, 61, of Clay Street, Niles, died at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at Lakeland Regional Health Center-Saint Joseph of a brief illness.

Todd was born July 25, 1951, in Niles to Roy M. and June L. (Gordon) Haynes. He was a 1969 graduate of Niles High School and attended college before working at Garden City Fan. Additionally he worked for Amtrak and was self-employed in his own business. Enjoying cooking, fishing, golf, and camping, Todd was above all an avid Notre Dame fan and sports enthusiast.

On April 28, 1979, in Niles, he married Kristine E. Holmes, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Allison Rae Haynes of St. Joseph and Megan Ashley Haynes of Niles. Two sisters, Ellen Haynes of Elkhart and Sheila Haynes of Michigan, also survive.

Funeral services for Glenn Todd Haynes will be Monday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m. at Halbritter Funeral Home with the

Rev. William Melody, C.S.C. of Notre Dame, Ind., officiating. Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Todd’s family received friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice.

Reynolds, Virginia Joanne (Romanski)

Virginia Joanne Reynolds, 76, of Buchanan, passed away Oct. 4, 2012, at her home of natural causes.

She was born Nov. 7, 1935, in Muskegon to John and Josephine Romanski.  She had lived here since 1947, was a pattern maker with Simplicity Pattern Co. and a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Buchanan. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandma and great-grandma.

On July 20, 1956, in Niles, she married Robert G. Reynolds, who survives.

Also surviving are her sons, Robert P. Reynolds and Michael (Elizabeth) Reynolds, both of Buchanan; daughters, Vicky Russell of Ft. Wayne, Joanne Bennett and Becky (Kurt) Florey, both of Buchanan, and Lisa (John) White of Niles; brother, Sam (Darlene) Romanski of Zeffner, Fla.; and sister, Delores Lang of Muskegon.

She was very close to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: grandchildren, Heather (Randy) Pruett, Tony Russell, Bob E., Jamie and Alexis Reynolds, Rocky (Brook) and Jenny Bennett, Marcus, Izaac and Alyssa Florey and Autumn Johnston; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Talin, Noah, Chelsey, Sage, Corbin, Dallis, Blaze, Alisia, Dayton and Tiffany.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Joseph, Richard and John; and sisters, Eleanor and Bernice.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Buchanan, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Hoven Funeral Home Inc. in Buchanan.

The family wishes to thank Hospice at Home Inc. and a special thanks to Markeyta Dawson, Debbie Dew and Connie Burrus.
