Albert Jasper Mitchell
April 18, 1853-November 17, 1929

    Funeral services for Alfred[sic] Jasper Mitchell, of Buchanan, who died on Sunday afternoon about 4:30 a few hours after he had been brought to Pawating hospital from Buchanan, will be held at 2 o'clock on Tuesday in the Troost and Augustine chapel.  The Rev. William W. Slee, pastor of the Methodist church will officiate.  Burial will be made in Silver Brook cemetery where Mrs. Mitchell who died three years ago is buried.  He was born on April 15, 1853. He is survived by seven children, four brothers and three sisters.  Mr. Mitchell was stricken with illness about noon on Sunday.

Hettie M. Horn
1844-1902

    After a week's serious illness Mrs. O.P. Horn Passed pearcefully away this afternoon at 2 o'clock.  The deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Geltmacher, who were among the most prominent of the early pioneer residents of this place.  Mrs. Horn was born in Niles 58 years ago.  In 1865 she was married to the late Dr. O.P. Horn, who was for many years a highly respected resident of this place.  To Dr. and Mrs. Horn one child was born, Gordon, who passed away several years ago.
    Mrs. Horn is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Pammie L. Griffith, of this city, and Mrs. Lizzie White, of Grand Rapids.  She also had two nephews, W.G. Griffith of NIles, and Dr. Paul G. White of Grand Rapids.
    Mrs. Horn was a member of the Episcopal church, from which place the funeral will occur on Thursday at an hour as yet to be determined upon.
    The deceased was the possessor of many lovable qualities, and her kindly ways made for her many friends, who will deeply deplore her demise.  She was a highly accomplished lady and for many years took an important part in social affairs.

   The funeral of the late Mrs. O.P. Horn will take place from the home on south Third street on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. R.H. F. Gairdner, former pastor of Trinity Episcopal church, and now of Grand Rapids, officiating, assisted by Rev. C.J. DeCoux.  Among those from out of town who have arrived to attend the funeral, are Mrs. Eliza Ford of Berrien Springs; Mr. and Mrs. Warren Griffith of Albion; Dr. Paul White and Mrs. Ralph White of Grand Rapids.

    Mrs. O.P. Horn, one of the oldest and best known residents of Niles, died this afternoon at 2 o'clock at her residence on South Third street.  The cause of her death was a paralytic stroke which she experienced a week ago Sunday night, though for some time she has been a sufferer from Bright's disease.
    Mrs. Horn was a daughter of the late J. Geltmacher and was born in Niles in 1844, and resided continuously here.  Shorly after the close of the civil war she was united in marriage to Dr. O.P. Horn and the union resulted in one son Gordon, who died in 1891.  Dr. Horn died in 1895.  The deceased leaves two sisters, Mrs. Charles Griffith of his city and Mrs. White of Grand Rapids, and two nephews, Warren Griffith and Dr. Paul G. WHite.
    Mrs. Horn was one of the most prominent ladies in Niles and her acquaintenance was very extended.  She was generous and kind and her sweet disposition endeared her in the hearts of all her friiends.
    The arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made.

    Mrs. Hettie M. Horn of Niles died Monday and is buried today.  She was a widow of the late Dr. O.P. Horn who was for many years the owner and publisher of the Niles Democrat.  Her son, an only child, died more than ten yers ago and her husand and her mother died in 1895.  Two sisters survive her.  Mrs. E.A. Ford, a friend from childhood, is in attendance upon her funeral.  She had other friends in this place who will deeply regret her her death. Mrs. Horn was born in Niles 58 years ago and nearly all her life had been passed in that town. 

Bradley Zimmerman
June 25, 1911 to June 22, 1988

    Bradley Zimmerman, 76, 549 Clark St., NIles, Died Wednesday, June 22, at 12:15 a.m. at Pawating Hospital.
    He was born June 25, 1911 in NIles and was a lifetime resident of this area. He was a member of Eagles Lodge and was a retired employee of Simplicity Pattern Co.,
    Survivors inclue a daughter, Joan Vanderboegh of NIles; a son, Franklin of Niles; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister Ada Cotton of South Carolina.
    Services are Friday at 11 a.m. at Halbritter Funeral Home, where the Rev. Lloyd Phillips of the Wesley United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.
    Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles H. Couch, Sr.

CHARLES COUCH, 72, SUCCUMBS TODAY

Charles H.  Couch, Sr., 72 resident of Niles 38 years, died at 4:30 this morning in
his home, 533 Lake street, after a two-months illness of a heart ailment.

A native of England, where he was born Sept. 11, 1870, Mr. Couch came to Niles from
Ypsilanti.  His marriage to Mrs. Couch, the former Davona Hubbard, was solemnized March 21,
1894, in Belleville, Mich.

With Mrs. Couch, he operated the Lake Street greenhouse 22 years, and sold out
early this month because of ill health. He also had been employed by the Michigan Central
railroad and was a member of Modern Woodmen of America.

Funeral Monday

Surviving with his widow are five children, Miss Lena Couch and Charles Couch, Jr.
Niles; Miss Nellie Couch, South Haven; William Couch, Chesterton, Ind., and Frank Couch,
Coldwater.  He also leaves four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Price and Kiger funeral home, where the service will be
conducted Monday afternoon at 3:30 by the Rev. Guy W. Simon, pastor of the First
Presbyterian church.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

 

MRS. MINNIE BUTTS

1884-1951

    Mrs. Minnie Butts, 1323 Maple street, died at 7 p.m. Saturday at Pawating hosptial.
She had been in poor health for two years.  Her husband, Frank, died in 1947.
    Surviving are one brother, Nick Rau, of Niles; one sister, Mrs. Ed Larson, of
Niles, and nieces and nephews.
    Mrs. Butts was born on June 26, 1884, in Niles, and had lived here all her life.
She was member of the Order of Eastern Star.
    Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home, where services will be conducted at 2
p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. T.M. Greenhoe, Presbyterian pastor. Burial will be in
Silverbrook cemetery.

CHARLES H. REUM CLAIMED BY DEATH
PROMINENT RETIRED FARMER, LIFELONG RESIDENT OF COMMUNITY, STRICKEN

    Confined to his bed for the last 18 months, Charles H. Reum, widely known Niles
farmer, died at 12:30 o'clock Sunday morning in his home near the Bell School, south of
Niles.
    Mr. Reum was 81 years old.  He was born in Milton township, Cass county, and had
spent his entire life in this vicinity. He had lived for the last 50 years in the home in
which he died.
    He leaves his widow, the former Christiana E. Doehrer, whom he married in Niles in
1884, a son, Arthur J., Mishawaka; three daughters, Mrs. Laura M. Rupel, Niles; Mrs. Carrie
M. Schafer and Mrs. Lydia N. Rupel, South Bend; three brothers, Yust C., Chris E., and
William C., Niles; also two sisters, Mrs. Anna Schwartz and Mrs. Mary Beehler, Niles.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday atfernoon[sic] in the Reum home,
and at 2:30 o'clock in the St. John's Evangelical church of which Mr. Reum was a member.
    Rites will be conducted by the Rev. Theo Eisen, with burial in Silverbrook
cemetery.
    Friends may call at the Reum home.
