NILES—Mr. Arthur E. Hall, 61, of 509 N. 14th St., former captain of the Niles Police Dept., died at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He had been a patient in the hospital for one week.

Mr. Hall was born Aug. 28, 1907, in Mecosta County, Mich., and had been a resident of this area since 1920 coming from Jackson, Mich. He married the former Mildred Glossenger Aug. 16, 1930 in South Bend. Mr. Hall was a member of the St. Joseph Valley Lodge No. four F and AM., the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Niles Safety Board.

He is survived by his widow, this mother, Mrs. Maude Hall of Niles; two sons, James of Bethesda, Md. and Larry of Niles; a brother, Lothaire Hall of Garden City, Mich.; a sister Mrs. Fern Helmick of Saline, Mich. and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Pifer Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Trenery, of Wesley United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home at 7 tonight.

NILES—Terry Lynn Fisher, 10-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Fisher, 334 S. Fourth, died today at Pawating Hospital.

Besides the parents, the infant is survived by two brothers, Timothy and Edwin, and two sisters, Bonnie Jean and Bernadine, all at home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. John D. Slowey officiating.

Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Halbritter-Swem Funeral Home after noon on Sunday.

NILES—Funeral services for Adolph Schelkopg 58, 355 Ironwood Drive, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Pifer Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Kinney, pastor of the Bertrand Bible Church officiating. Committal services will be conducted in the Silverbrook Cemetery by the St. Joseph Valley Lodge No. 4.

Mr. Schelkopf died at 11:15 p.m. Sunday in the South Bend Memorial Hospital where he had been ill for the past two weeks.

NILES—Edward Blee, 91, of 1217 State Line Rd., died at 6:15 p.m. Monday in the Oak Grove manor Nursing Home where he had been ill for several years.

He was born Dec. 10, 1876 in Pennsylvania and was married to the late Laura Lee who died in 1948. Mr. Blee was a retired employe of the city of Niles.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with graveside rites at Silverbrook Cemetery. Rev. John R. Wyngarden, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate.

Friends may all at the Halbritter-Swem Funeral Home after 7 tonight.

Lawrence Dean Baxter, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Baxter of 1154 Lambert St., died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind.

He was born Nov. 17, 1968 in South Bend.

He is survived by his parents, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Jones of Niles and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Baxter of Niles.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Silverbrook Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert V. Kinney of the Bertrand Bible Church officiating.

Friends may call after 7 tonight at the Halbritter-Swem Funeral Home.

 

Carey, Richard William 1922-1992

            Funeral services for Richard William Carey, 69, of the Veterans Administration Center, Battle Creek, formerly of Niles, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Pifer-Smith Funeral Home, by the Rev. Stephen Naas of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

            Mr. Carey died suddenly at 11:35 p.m. Tuesday at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Battle Creek.

            He was born June 13, 1922, in Niles and left Niles in 1955 in South Bend, Ind.[sic]

            Mr. Carey was a tool and die maker.

            He served in the United States Coast Guard in World War II.

            Mr. Carey was married to Mary Lu Byrne, who preceded him in death in 1958.

            Survivors include three sons, Timothy Carey of Elkhart, Ind., Richard Carey of Mishawaka, Ind., and Robert Carey of Indianapolis; and four grandchildren.

            There will be no visitation.

            Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Funeral services for the late L.F. Brown were held this morning at 10 o’clock from the Brown residence.  Rev. Harold Holt of the Trinity church officiated.  Many floral tributes were in evidence and a large crowd paid their last respects.  At the cemetery the Masons held ritualistic rites.
