RESIDENT HERE 50 YEARS DIES FRIDAY

Jacob Lewis Clevenger, 69 of 506 Cherry street, for 50 years a resident of Niles and railway carpenter in the bridge department of Michigan Central for 30 years, died at 5 pm.  Friday in the Kalamazoo hospital where he had been ill six months.

He was born in North Manchester, Ind., Jan. 31, 1875. His wife, Edith, died in 1940.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. James Shipperley, Niles; a son, John Clevenger, Niles; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Edith Hefling, Mendon, and Mrs. Audrey Weidelman, Toledo, O., and a brother, William Clevenger, North Manchester, Ind.

Friends may call at the Price and Kiger funeral chapel where Dr. Guy W. Simon will officiate at services at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be made in Silverbrook cemetery.

CHARLES S. QUIMBY, 73, DIED TODAY

Charles S. Quimby, 73, the oldest past commander of the Knights Templar of Niles and for many years operator of a drygoods store, died in his home at 621 East Main street at 3 a.m. today after several months of failing health.

The Quimby Drygoods store, located where the Mutual Drug store now stands, was closed about 18 years ago. Mr. Quimby was widely known and had a host of friends throughout the community. He was active in both business and fraternal circles.

He was past master of the St. Joseph Valley lodge No. 4, F & AM, and a member of the St. Joseph Valley chapter No. 2, RAM, the Niles council No. 19, R & SM, the Knights Templar and of the Trinity Episcopal church.

A son of Capt. H.B. Quimby and Jennie Smith Quimby, he was born Jan. 11, 1871 in Fort Davis, Tex.

Quimby is survived by a sister, Miss Alice H. Quimby, who is now staying with Mrs. E.F. Burke, north of Niles.

Funeral services for Charles S. Quimby, 73, of 621 East main street, will be conducted in the Rutherford funeral chapel Thursday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Harry L. Nicholson, pastor of the Trinity Episcopal church.  Private burial will be made in Silverbrook cemetery later.

Niles Truck Driver Dies in Crash

Joseph Goodman, 40, of 615 South St. Joseph avenue, died Thursday afternoon in Roseland hospital, Chicago, where he was taken unconscious after the Drewry Brewing Company semi-trailer which he was driving tipped over, skidding into a light pole.

The accident occurred shortly after 3 Thursday at 130th and Stoney Island streets, Chicago. A coroner's inquest was set for 10 this morning.

Goodman had been driving for the Drewery Brewing company, South Bend, throughout Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois for about a year, officials said today.

Born in Nappanee, Ind., March 24, 1904, Goodman came to Niles 30 years ago.

Surviving are the widow, Alice, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Zellard Goodman, Niles; three children, Clarence, Thelma and Virginia Goodman; six brothers, Herbert Goodman, Benton Harbor; Home Goodman, in Texas; Gaylord Goodman, in the navy, and Clifford, George and Kenneth Goodman, Niles, and two sisters, Mrs. Ralph True, Niles, and Mrs. Glenn Ellison, Dowagiac.

Funeral Friday for Vandalia Woman, 49

Funeral services for Miss Donna May Merdith, 49, of Vandalia, who died at 7 a.m. Wednesday in the Cass county hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Rutherford funeral home. Miss Merdith had been ill four months with heart trouble.

The Rev. G.A. Steeby, pastor of the First Evangelical church, will officiate at the services and at burial in Silverbrook cemetery.  Friends may call at the Rutherford funeral home prior to the funeral.

Miss Merdith was born in Bluffton, Ind., May 25, 1895, and had . . .[illegible] . . all her life.  An aunt, Mrs. Harley Hayes, survives.

Lucille Ann Ray

Daughter, Aged 5, Dies at Coldwater

Lucille Ann Ray, five-year-old daughter of Pvt. Edwin and Alice ray, 640 North Eighth street, died this morning in the Coldwater state home. She had been ill since three weeks old.

The child was born in Niles Nov. 7, 1938. Surviving is a sister, Clara Ray, and the parents.

Private funeral services will be conducted in the Price and Kiger funeral chapel.

Sarah G. Ricks

NILES—Mrs. Sarah G. Ricks, 73, of 1350 Cass St., Died at 3 p.m. Monday in Pawating Hospital, where she had been a patient since May 7.

Born June 27, 1898, in Jonesboro, Ind., Mrs. Ricks had lived here for 35 years, coming from Chicago.  On Oct. 5, 1922, in Jonesboro, she married Russell Ricks, who survives.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Daughters of America and the First Baptist Church of Niles.

Additional survivors include a son, Robert A. Ricks of Kalamazoo; a daughter, Mrs. Sara L. Rees of Marion, Ind. and five grandchildren

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in the Pifer Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ray Cunningham of the First Baptist Church of Niles officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
