Jason Lietz Obituary

Jason William Lietz, loving husband, devoted father and dedicated son, 51 years of age, passed away from a brief illness on Monday, September 18, 2023 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Jason was born on November 8, 1971 to Dean and Linda (Hansel) Lietz. He grew up in Niles, Michigan and later moved to Buchanan, Michigan where he and his wife raised their family.

Left to cherish the memory of Jason is his loving wife of 28 years, Shelley Lietz; his daughters, Melena Hogan (John Hewer), Catherine Lietz, Claire Lietz, and Audrey Lietz; his parents, Dean and Linda Lietz; his brother, Scott (Melissa) Lietz; and his sister, Rachel Lietz.

Jason was passionate about traveling and being outdoors. He found peace in camping, hiking, and simply being in nature. As a self-proclaimed arborist, his memory will live on in the trees he planted, the knowledge he shared, and the lives he touched.

His love for music was infectious, often seen playing the guitar and singing, which brought an abundance of joy to those around him. He was the front man of his college band, Wok the Dog, and continued to write and record music over the years. Jason cultivated that same love of music in his daughters.

Jason had many other interests including Star Wars, trivia, science, board and video games, and cars. He took pride in planning annual family vacations to national parks, ski resorts, and historic sites around the country, creating memories that will forever be treasured.

As an avid sports enthusiast, Jason was a proud coach of his daughters' elementary and middle school basketball teams and always supported them in all of their athletic endeavors. He loved watching sports and rooting for his favorite team, Notre Dame.

Jason's dedication to his community was evident in his role as a member of the City of Buchanan Planning Commission. Through his career with NIPSCO and later NiSource, he led others in advocating for the environment, which was an integral part of his life.

Niles Daily Star, Published online 4:55 pm Monday, January 18, 2021

Mary Charlotte Bonine Roberts, 86, died on Jan. 15 in Valdosta, Georgia from complications of COVID-19. She was the daughter of State Senator G. Elwood Bonine and Ruth Morse and grew up in the Bonine House, the Victorian home at Penn Road and M-60, built by her ancestors James E. and Sarah Bogue Bonine, stationmasters on the Underground Railroad.

Mary Charlotte was part of the first graduating class from Cassopolis High School and returned for her 50th reunion in 2002.  It was then she saw her beloved home almost in ruins, and hoped an organization could save it.  She was thrilled when the Underground Railroad Society of Cass County purchased the Bonine House and the Bonine Carriage House across the street in December 2010.

From 2012 to 2019, accompanied by family and friends, she visited her home during Underground Railroad Days the second weekend in July. She delighted in greeting visitors and telling them about growing up on Elk Park Farm. Over the years, she donated Bonine family photos, furniture and artifacts to the Bonine House.

Mary Charlotte was a classical pianist, an animal lover and a sports enthusiast.  A farmer at heart she always referred to the Bonine House as “home.”  A photo tribute to Mary Charlotte can be found on urscc.org, as well as her memoir “Growing Up in the Bonine House.”

Memorials in her name can be made on the URSCC website or mailed to URSCC PO Box 124, Vandalia, MI 49095.
